This has probably been explored somewhere else, but I have also come to believe that science fiction has a almost spiritual impulse behind it. It tells stories that lead the reader to another "existence", transcendance and imaginings beyond are belief, with a sense of almost holy reverance involved. And for those who actually are religious (no offense to those who are not) such a good example of how we are reflections of our Creator as we can also create new worlds in the literary sense, as our creator does so in reality. I find that the more science (as well as science fiction) expands we get a closer glimpse of a minutiae of the vastness of creation and our Creator.
